Stress test

Feeling stressed? Try this test from Leapfrog Innovations. The idea is to look at the picture (link is below) to see if you can find any differences between the two seemingly identical leaping dolphins. If you can find more than three, you’re stressed.

Ready? Click here for the photo.

Ha! I like this one.

For a slightly more serious look at the importance of fun in the workplace, check out these excerpts from a keynote speech by Julia Hector-Douglas at the May 5 Granite State Human Resources Conference, also brought to you courtesy of Leapfrog.

Do NOT put these on the menu!

I was skipping around UNLV’s hospitality site, looking for something or other, when I came across The Gallery of Regrettable Food and just lost it completely. James Lileks has collected some of the worst of the worst cookbooks from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, and his take on some of the photos he finds therein are beyond hilarious.

An excellent way to have some fun while procrastinating getting your work done. The scary thing is that I heard somewhere recently that some of this stuff is coming back into style…

Top 10 signs your speech is boring

You have to check out David Letterman’s Top Ten Signs Your Convention Speech Is Boring.

My favorite is #9: Your only applause comes when your microphone stops working

Thanks to an alert MIMlist poster for bringing this one to my attention.

What’s in a name?

I got a great e-mail today from motivational speaker Derrick Hayes. While I couldn’t answer his question, I love his deal of taking a name and turning it into positive message: From now on, I no longer am just Sue, but S.U.E. (Seek Unlimited Excellence)!

What are friends for?

Just a little reminder that in this industry, more than most, we get by with a little help from our friends. Happy Monday!

Dream job vacation

I know, I know, if there are two words that shouldn’t go together, they’d have to be “job” and “vacation.” But vocation vacations says they’ll help you test-drive your dream job while on vacation. What I found really funny was that one of the dream jobs you can try out is…

Wedding planner!!

Is there anything about the idea of crazed bridezillas, controlling in-laws-to-be, and dazed and confused grooms that sounds dreamlike to you?

Another one is innkeeper–sure, I want to deal with missing reservations, housekeeping, and disgruntled guests on my vacation!

But horse trainer, hmmm. That sounds like fun…

TGIF timewaster

Humor.about.com strikes again. This afternoon’s choice is “Let them sing it for you.” Just type in your lyrics (I made up some really goofy ones) and the site finds snippets from real recording artists for each word. Hard to explain, but definitely good for a couple minutes’ break.

Just in time for the next teambuilding event

This poster from despair.com probably wouldn’t make the best backdrop for a teambuilding activity, but it sure cracked me up.

Cartoon of the day

This cartoon is too funny–and too true. Makes me glad once again that all I have to do is write about this industry, not actually be in charge of meetings and conventions (especially Comdex!!).

Google bombs-away

Nothing whatsoever to do with meetings, but since almost every conversation I’m having today is devolving into politics…

Go to Google and, depending on your political affiliation, type in either “waffles” or “miserable failure” (you can probably guess which will make you happier) and see what comes up (the Democrats seem to be better at this than the Republicans–Kerry was third on the list when I checked, while W comes up first). Ah, Google-bombing at its finest–I think somebody needs to get a job!

More silly ways to while away a lovely Friday afternoon, courtesy of Corbin Ball’s TechTalk e-newsletter:

museumofhoaxes.com, which details “the top 100 April Fool’s hoaxes of all time.” I like the Liberty Taco Bell–people are so gullible.

Dilbert Games. Corbin recommends the Mission Statement Generator, but I prefer the Dilberito game—-spent way too much time playing it last night!

OK, back to work!
