Priceless: Jeff Hurt’s favorite planning things

Think of Julie Andrews and those adorable Von Trapp children wearing clothes made of curtains and singing about their favorite things. But since you’re a planner, not an Austrian nun-turned stepmom, maybe you can better relate to Jeff Hurt’s version than whiskers on kittens, etc. It starts off with:

Spreadsheets and reg lists, floor plans and layouts
BEOs, menus, food and beverage, and payouts
Tradeshow booths, drayage and, pipe and drape
These are a few of my event planning things

And just gets better from there. Made me laugh out loud. Thanks, Jeff!

Something to watch for at your next networking function

There’s a study out now that proves what you’ve probably already noticed: Talking with attractive women can make men who ordinarily are pretty smart become stupid (at least temporarily). From the Telegraph (via Slashdot):

The research shows men who spend even a few minutes in the company of an attractive woman perform less well in tests designed to measure brain function than those who chat to someone they do not find attractive.

Researchers who carried out the study, published in the Journal of Experimental and Social Psychology, think the reason may be that men use up so much of their brain function or ‘cognitive resources’ trying to impress beautiful women, they have little left for other tasks.

Not that there’s anything that can be done about it, but it’s nice to have science validate what I first observed at a dance at Camp Yo Aunta back in probably fifth grade. While I would have guessed the same holds true for women trying to impress good-looking guys, the article says not. Hmm. Anyway, it’d be fun to pay attention to it at your next networking function and see if your attendees are the exception or the rule on this one.

Off topic: Let’s take a moment

Take four minutes and 16 seconds to watch this amazing video. It’s the best break you’ll get all day.

Here’s to being fully present for every wonderful moment we have. (Thanks to Johnnie Moore. I needed this.)

What to do when a cell phone rings during a presentation

Check out these funny, embarrassing, and just plain weird responses to a cell phone ringing during various presentations: Very Public Cellphone Disruptions. I like the quacking duck during the President’s press conference; as he said, where do people find these ringtones?

You know you’re from Vegas if…

Here’s a cute bit from Bits & Pieces: You might be from Las Vegas if…

OT: What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?

That’s the question making the round on the MiForum listserv today, and it’s a good one. Not sure what I’d tell myself, other than:

1. Never stop learning (and everything is teaching you something, whether you know it at the time or not).

2. Stop worrying so much about what others think of you. It’s what you think of yourself that really matters (and really, no one else is thinking about you as much as you think they are–they’re all worrying about what you think of them. One of life’s little ironies).

3. It’s better to try and fail than to chicken out and regret it later. Take chances every chance you get. (See #1–failure is the best teacher of all. Learn from it whenever you can.)

4. Drive fast cars now while your reflexes and vision are good.

5. Stop beating up your body. It’s got to last a while.

And, of course: This is as good-looking as you’re ever going to get–flaunt it while you can!

Is social media making us antisocial?

The weirdest coincidence at ASAE was when I was sitting with some old and new friends discussing the meaning of life and meetings with half my brain and attention, and tweeting with the other half. I just had said something about feeling guilty about not putting my full attention on the people I was with when the person next to me held up her Blackberry to show a Facebook message from a mutual friend who also was at ASAE.

The message: “just realized that the use of social technology during meetings actually makes you less social–at least to the people sitting next to you!”

Made me literally LOL at the time. But ain’t it the truth?

What a way to start the day

With Laurel and Hardy, and a dash of Santana (this is one of the many reasons I love Patti Digh and her 37 Days blog, where I found this, much to my everlasting delight):

Here’s hoping the rest of my last day at ASAE is this much fun!
