MPI tries YouTube out
What do you think of Meeting Professionals International’s attempt to promote it Professional Education Conference North America on YouTube (see below video)?
I applaud them for trying out a new medium, but wish it wasn’t just a slick ad. It would have been a lot more effective, I think, if they had just interviewed some people about what their opinions of PEC-NA are, or, better yet, if they had put out a call to members to submit their own videos, have people vote on the top five or whatever, and use that for the promotion. Then again, that might be a fairly big risk: I wonder if anyone would submit a video about the conference? I don’t know if people feel that passionate about it (but that’s another story, isn’t it?).
Anyway, if they could have done something a little rawer, less packaged, it would work better, but good for them for giving it a shot.
Update: Here’s the latest
Better, but still awfully slick. Then again, that may just be my bias.

I love it. I think the key to success on You Tube is humor. So, you have to give them points for poking fun at themselves and their industry. If the ad gets people talking, then it was successful. I wonder if as many people would pass it on if it was a “straight on” talking heads video? It might be interesting to try out two version and see the difference.

This kind of goes along the same lines. User generated video and unbiased opinion. With Video, credibility is user generated, not “spun” by a set inhouse agenda. Here is an article we wrote to MPI last month about video:
Hi Bruce,
I just read Robert Carey’s article in Meetings News on MPI Raising the Bar at PEC. I was extremely surprised to see MPI doing “video interviews for attendee feedback” in house without a third party providing this service. Now, I am not surprised about the video interviews, but, as an MPI member who covered the conference via video interviews with attendee feedback and introduced this concept for free to MPI at WEC in Montreal last July 2007, that they didn’t ask us as an “un biased” “outside” third party to conduct these interviews for your upcoming PEC conference to provide a true “social networking” experience.
Meetings TV spent 4 days in Montreal filming exhibitors and attendees and posted their feedback on http://www.meetingstv.com at no cost. As press, we provided an unbiased view of attendee feedback from new and veteran members of MPI at no cost. We even offered to forward the videos at no cost to MPI to place on their website. We received no return calls.

True social networking is about “communities” and everyone should get their say. Let’s hope all video comments are left in the video and not edited in house by the video editor. Social networking is about people sharing their thoughts, all of them without editing.
I would hope that every members comments, good or bad will be taken as a “positive” and remain in the video unedited.
As an active and engaged member of MPI I still am actively involved and happy to see this organization being proactive,
