Hotels and hidden fees: here we go again

This time, it’s a class-action suit filed against Starwood for not disclosing mandatory housekeeping and bell “gratuities” (IMHO, if it’s mandatory, it’s a fee, not a gratuity or tip—but I digress). Click here for the gory details.

Lileks at Disney World

There’s just something about Disney World that grabs you and won’t let you go. Witness this hysterical commentary on a recent visit by the incomparable James Lileks. I tried to find a snip to pull out here, but it’s all just, well, so Lileks that it was too hard to pick just one. But he just nails the place, I thought.

Career advice

This interview between Guy Kawasaki and career specialist Penelope Trunk is well worth a read. My favorite part is this:

Question: When should I ask for a promotion?

Answer: Maybe never. The average salary increase is four percent. Is that going to change your life in any meaningful way? On top of that, someone is promoting you up their ladder, but their ladder is not necessarily your best path. So stay focused on where you want to go instead of the paths other people have created for you.

Getting a promotion is so last century. Instead of letting last century’s carrots dictate your workplace rewards, figure out what will be really meaningful to you: training, mentoring, flex time, whatever it is that means more than four percent more money. These are all things that can really improve your life and your career.

The most shocking part, to me, was her advice not to report sexual harassment: “In most cases, you will destroy your career if you report sexual harassment. So unless you are in physical danger, you should not report harassment. The laws governing sexual harassment don’t protect women who report. The law protects companies from being sued by the women who report.”

Customers weigh in on best and worst airlines

The University of Michigan recently conducted a survey to see how people rate airlines in terms of customer service, and here are the results.

UAL Corp.’s United Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc., both of which restructured under Chapter 11 in recent years, ranked last and next-to-last, respectively, among airlines in terms of customer satisfaction in a survey to be released Tuesday by the University of Michigan.

Marks were only slightly better for AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, which teetered on the verge of bankruptcy before winning employee concessions in 2003, and Northwest Airlines Corp., which is currently in bankruptcy.

Southwest came in first.

Sweating at work and other items of possible interest

I ran across a few items that I thought might be of possible interest. First up, Burn calories at your desk with the Mayo Clinic’s vertical workstation, which is basically a treadmill/desk-with-a-PC combo. Instead of shelling out $1,600, couldn’t you just walk in place while e-mailing? Just a thought.

Next up, for those of us who really want to squeeze yet more work into the day (with or without the treadmill), scientists have come up with a way to painlessly stay up for 25 hours at a stretch. Uh, no thanks. On the plus side, it might help insomniacs better regulate their sleep cycles, just by using light therapy.

And finally, here’s yet another reason for treating employees—and ourselves—well: Feeling life treats you unfairly ‘raises heart attack risk’.

P.S. For the most magnificent example of teamwork I’ve seen in a long while, check out this dressage video. I am in awe.
