Hotels on screen
Reforming prostitutes, stabbing people in the shower, tricycling after twin ghosts—ah, hotels in the movies are a wonderful thing. And now, here are the top 10 hotel movies scenes (according to a TravelLodge poll):
1. Pretty Woman â Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in a bubble bath
2. Psycho â The Shower Scene
3. The Shining - Danny Torrance (Danny Lloyd) facing the image of dead twins
4. Beverly Hills Cop - Eddie Murphyâs reception desk rant
5. Indecent Proposal - Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore have sex on $1,000,000
6. Thelma and Louise â Brad Pitt and Gena Davis love scene before he steals her cash
7. Ghostbusters - the team trash a hotel dining room chasing ghost
8. Godfather â Al Pacino hears about fatherâs shooting while having dinner with Diane Keaton
9. Trainspotting â Ewan McGregor leaves hotel room with the drug money
10. Pulp Fiction â Maria de Medeiros tells Bruce Willis she wants a âpot bellyâ
But what are the great hotel conference scenes, that’s what I want to know. I nominate George Clooney’s keynote at the Divorce Attorney Association conference in Intolerable Cruelty, which didn’t get much traction at the box office, but I thought was pretty funny.

My vote for number one hotel conference scene is the “Greed is good” speech in Wall Street. I had to go back and check, but it looks like the shareholder meeting is at a hotel called “The Roosevelt” (sign on the podium).
For comedy, I would nominate “High Anxiety” with Mel Brooks attempting to deliver a speech on penis envy at a psychiatric convention without offending a little girl in the first row.
There is also Chevy Chase’s impromptu tribute speech to Fred Dorfman in “Fletch”. Admittedly, it’s not really a conference per se, but it is a large meeting in a hotel events room. Does that count?

Excellent nominations, Ken! I had forgotten all about that High Anxiety scene.

What about the scene in The Fugitive where Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) interrupts the keynote address of Dr. Charles Nichols (Jeroen Krabbe) in order to accuse him of murder? Whenever that happens at my event - even to a panelist, not just a keynote - it’s quite a sensation.

How about everything that happens in the movie “What’s Up Doc?” with Ryan O’Neal and Barbra Streisand? Switching bags, running between rooms, talking under a banquet table, making out on a floor under construction…
Also, for worst conference scene, Kevin Costner in Rumor Has It…. He’s talking about the Internet, and the speech is so simplistic and stupid and laughable.

To me, the funniest movie ever about hotels and conferences was “The Bellboy” - a classic Jerry Lewis movie made back in the 50’s at The Fontainebleau when it was in its heyday. Everything he tried to do went wrong, including setting up the entire grand ballroom theatre style and then inadvertently knocking down the all of the chairs row by row like dominos. It was brilliantly done and hilarious!

Great nominations all around. 2 additions I would have nominated would be in “True Lies” with Arnold Schwarzenegger (pardon spelling) riding on a Cop’s Horse through a Marriott chasing a terrorist to the roof!
Also, I would mention the Waldorf Astoria elevator scene in “Serendipity” with John Cusack & Kate Beckinsale taking separate elevators trying to land on the same floor to prove themselves worthy of the evening’s occurences.

How about in “Four Rooms” with Tim Roth, who plays the hotel’s only employee on New Years Eve. Roth receives a room service call from the Presidential Suite, which is being occupied by Quentin Tarantino, Bruce Willis, and others. After dropping off the champagne, doughnut, and other unusual items, he finds himself enticed into partaking in their bet. Tarantino proposes to purchase a luxurious classic car for his friend if Roth can flick a lighter 10 x’s producing a flame each time. If he cannot, then Tarantino gets to chop off his friends finger with a butcher knife, (which is stretched out onto a cutting board on the bar during the game). Well, just as luck would have it on Tim’s first flick, he doesn’t produce a flame and off goes the finger….OUCH!!
