Five trends for 2006
For travel and hospitality, here’s USA Today’s pick of the five biggest trends in 2006:
1. A-380, a mammoth new plane from Airbus, takes to the air. “Longer, taller, and wider than the White House,” the article says. Wow.
2: New Orleans returns, with predictions for a strong fall comeback for meetings. We’ll see.
3: Registered travelers get rolling. They predict the new TSA security program that allows some passengers to trade a background check for shorter lines will prove popular. But: “Some people, such as former TSA administrator John Magaw, have warned that terrorists could enroll and bypass rigorous scrutiny.” Sigh.
4: New rooms in New York—and even higher rates than ever.
5: Atlanta gets a new runway, a move that hopefully will cut down on flight delays.
I’m still mulling over my own top whatever list of predictions for the meetings business…

Hi Sue, great topic. Virtual site visits are going be huge. Site visits of venues and services. Funny, I just got back from video taping our 25th venue (a Chicago restaraunt) for editing and uploading on Hereschicago.com. We have been doing these for the last 18 months, however, we knew we were way ahead of our time when we started out. We didnt want to “push” the video on people, but, invite them to participate. Now our restaurants, museums, venues and even services like teambuilding companies are jumping in to the Video world. We have a directory of meeting and event vendors in Chicago and video is becoming our largest component. Video blogs, Audio blogs, RSS (we hope) and SEO are all going to be huge. Staying with the times, or you will be “dust”. Better yet, get in the future, Now! Hey, that is kind of catchy….Anyhow, good luck with the blog. I hope to link to it soon once we get our blog up and running in the next three months!

Jim, I’d like to think you’re right about vblogs and RSS, etc., becoming big in this industry this year. I’m not sure that people are into it yet, but I agree about the dust thing. Glad to hear you’re getting out in front of the curve (for this industry).
Are people using the videos on your site? I think it’s a great idea.

Hi Sue, sorry it took me so long to respond. Bad blogger! (slapping my wrist). Yes, the videos are very popular. It provides for visual dialogue and rich media content….what does that mean to the visitor? It means a positive visitor experience by providing them with an “inside look into venues and services” from their desktop. Our blog is now in development at www.hereschicagoblog.com which will eventually be linked to our brand new website “re” design so you can enter the blog from the home page. The blog will have video and audio as well as text under meeting specific chicago categories. WE all know “content is king” and our blog will be our forum for content specific to Chicago meetings and events planning. I like to consider the blog as a “helping hand” to planners seeking “inside information” about Chicago. I truly want to help people plan their meetings in Chicago! I was born and raised in Chicago and very proud of our city. Sure, we have challenges, but, we have many solutions that far outweight the challenges. FYI, I have provided a link to your blog from hereschicagoblog.com. We would like to have a link from this blog as well in return. Content is going to be from our experts in Chicago in restaurants, catering, nightlife, meeting production, etc. Right now we are “just starting” and just have some “sample” content up right now.
