Top 10 challenges for the hospitality industry
These challenges from the International Society of Hospitality Consultants seem pretty on the mark to me. Here are just the top five (for explanations and the rest of the list, click here).
1. Changing Labor Conditions (the labor union issues should be especially interesting in 2006)
2. Escalating Operating Costs
3. Impact of Rising Energy Costs on Consumer Travel & Hotel Demand
4. Escalating Renovation and Construction Costs
5. Havoc from Recent Natural Disasters

#1 is right on the money. Labor contract negotiations are going to be “interesting” indeed moving forward. UNITE HERE had a huge year in 2005…getting the expiration dates of all of those contracts in sync was a major win. They will be propelled by those wins, and will want blood on the floor after the next round.
In 2005 UNITE HERE also showed us that they are developing very effective FUD and Astroturfing campaigns, as their propaganda and intimidation tactics aimed toward meeting planners demonstrated.
