Dill we meet again…

I was having lunch the other day at Pickity Place (a very cute, grow-their-own-herbs kind of place in New Hampshire). They always do a little riff on the herb that’s associated with the zodiac sign that month, and Cancer’s herb is dill:

Dill and fennel seeds were known as “go-to-meeting seeds,” and were given to children to chew during long church services to keep them quiet.

So, I’m guessing that might be seasonings to avoid at lunch if you want participants to participate shortly after. Though I haven’t noticed any big calming effects after eating dill or fennel, but who knows. Might be worth keeping a dish of fennel instead of candies for staff meetings that tend to get overheated.

Contest: Name this blog!

Oh, I just love this! After I ranted a couple of times (here and here) about how tired Xtreme and Xperiment and other X-names are, A Daily Reader took me to task:

Yes, the whole “X” thing is old, and it is unfortunate that ASAE is using it as part of the meeting theme. But at the same time I do have to say that replacing “to” with “2″ beyond tired too.

You are so right! I never really liked it, but couldn’t think of anything better when I first launched this thing a few years ago. And facetoface just looks icky.

So, here’s your chance to name this blog. Put your suggestions in the comments below, or e-mail them to me. I’ll put the best suggestions up for a vote here on (for now) face2face, and the winner will win, I dunno, something. A free subscription to one of our magazines? Naw, since they’re free anyway, that’s not much of an incentive. How about a book on meeting planning from my vast library? Or some leather luggage? Well, I have to do some more thinking on this, but there will be a small-but-fabulous prize of some kind.

So go ahead and send those suggestions! I can’t wait to see what you come up with (and if no one wants to play, well, we’ll be stuck with f2f since I obviously haven’t come up with a better name in three years.)

HCEA still going strong at 75

The Healthcare Convention & Exhibitors Association may have turned 75 this year, but the old dog still has a few tricks left in its bag. I wasn’t able to attend this year, which is too bad. I a blast last year in Austin (links here, here, here, here, here, here, and here).

Anyway, though the press release doesn’t give many details, it sounds like it was equally fun and educational this year. They added more workshops and gave the exhibit hall a more-open configuration for the June meeting at the Morial Convention Center and headquarters hotel Fairmont New Orleans

I also like that they labeled each session according to the level of expertise a participant should have to get the most out of it—wish more organizations would do this. But what I really like is the quote from HCEA executive vice president Eric Allen: “You want to know what’s made HCEA great for 75 years?” Allen asked the audience during the Business Meeting. “Look around. It’s all of us, because our members care enough to pursue a vision and meet needs, and maintain a vision of this industry as the greatest marketing medium in all of healthcare, and the greatest industry segment in all of the meetings industry.”

News from HCEA:

  • Carol Wilson, HCEA Director of Meetings, was honored with the HCEA Distinguished Service Award to acknowledge her decades of service in the healthcare convention marketing industry and her dedication to HCEA. Wilson has been on the staff of HCEA since the Kellen Company assumed management of the association in 1986.
  • Juleanne Dawson, Marketing Services Manager, Bard Access Systems, Salt Lake City, was named HCEA president for 2005–2006.
  • Other 2005–2006 HCEA officers are: President Elect — Cynthia Holloway, United States Surgical/Tyco Healthcare, Norwalk, Conn.; Vice President — Sue Jones, Boston Scientific Corporation, Natick, Mass.; Treasurer — Geri-Dee Shaffer, Aesculap, Inc., Duluth, Ga.; Secretary — Barbara Costa, Organon Pharmaceuticals USA, Roseland, N.J.; and Immediate Past President — James Hladnik, Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, Ill.

The association’s 2005-2006 directors are Karen Kingston, B. Braun Medical, Bethlehem, Pa.; Judy Peak, Spectranetics Corporation, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Karen Prieto, Forest Laboratories, New York; Sandra Ratcliffe, Pfizer, Inc., New York; Kim Thompson, Biosense Webster, Diamond Bar, Calif.; Jan Blanck, Baxter Healthcare Corp., Round Lake, Ill.; George Feehan, GWF Associates, Hamilton, N.J.; and Sherri Sujai, American Society for Microbiology, Washington.

The association’s 2005–2007 directors are Joyce Banister, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Plainsboro, N.J.; Susan Huff, Medtronic, Inc., Minneapolis; Laine Mann, Schering-Plough Corporation, Kenilworth, N.J.; Riki Metzger, Merck Human Health Division, North Wales, Pa.; Barbara Orr, Poretta & Orr, Inc., Doylestown, Pa.; and Kevin Wohlfort, American Urological Association, Linthicum, Md.

  • TVs in the mirrors?

    Vibetv
This one freaked me out a little: Among the many perks guests staying in San Francisco’s Hotel Nikko 28 Imperial Club rooms is “the newest luxury electronics: bathroom mirrors with built-in television and built-in lighting. Hotel Nikko San Francisco will be the first hotel in the world to feature these devices, called VibeTV mirrors.”

I searched high and low for a photo of these things, but couldn’t find one (Thanks to Linda, we got a photo of it—click to enlarge). I’m trying to imagine why you’d be looking in a mirror to see something other than your face, and am having a hard time coming up with one. Well, if your VIP stays in one of these and comes to the meeting with shaving cuts or crazy makeup, you’ll know why!

    Ever-surging hotel fees

There are some good articles in the latest issue of BTN, including:

Hotels Pile On The Fees: New, Increased Meetings Surcharges To Reach Historic Heights. You have to love Bjorn Hanson of PricewaterhouseCoopers, who loves to dig into hotels on this topic. Like this quote: “Master folio billing fees, according to Hanson, could be interpreted as a ‘bill for a bill.’”

He also says this will be a record year for hotel fees and surcharges. What is the world coming to?

Just get it all in the contract, including a clause saying that no additional fees beyond those already agreed to in the contract will be imposed without your express permission, or words to that effect.
