Off topic but absolutely beautiful

This is one of the most beautiful photos I’ve seen in ages. Just wanted to share.

One for the “whoops” file

According to Yahoo! News, if you get Oklahoma’s 2005 Annual Events Guide, just chuck it. In addition to grammatical and factual errors, it touted cow-flop throwing at an event in Western Oklahoma, which probably isn’t on your attendees’ must-do list.

And worse, it also depicted “Civil War re-enactors in Confederate uniforms firing cannons underneath a Confederate battle flag,” which could be seriously offensive to some groups. The culprit, as so often they turn out to be, is a former employee (it doesn’t say if s/he was disgruntled, but they usually are). The state is recalling all 200,000 of the brochures.

One more example of why you can never proofread your marketing materials too thoroughly, says she who once wrote up a description of an industrial vacuum product that scooped up particulates down to “sex parts per million.” Don’t let this happen to you!

Great Scott!

You know how one of the safety basics every meeting attendee should know is to take off their badge when they’re outside the meeting space? Well, no one told Scott Ginsberg, who on election day will have worn his name tag exactly four years running. As he says on his Web site:

In the beginning, it all started out as an experiment. “What would happen if I wore a nametag all the time?” I wondered. Maybe people would be friendlier. Maybe people would be more willing to say hello. Maybe people would stare at me and think I was crazy!

Either way, I predicted that people’s reactions to wearing a nametag would be pretty interesting. What I did not predict, however, was that wearing a nametag would become my own effective tool for increasing friendliness; especially in an isolated society that so desperately needs to hear more of the word “hello.”

Just think of the different reactions you’d get, depending on the situation: Probably every customer in the store will come up and ask you questions, thinking the nametag means you work there. And I can only imagine what they’d think if you wore one on your bathing suit at the beach! While it has led him to meet many interesting people and have some adventures, Scott does admit the downsides, including that it can be hard on clothes, double as a shaver when wore on a bare chest, and even incite violence on occasion.

I think I’ll stick with a friendly “hello” myself, and leave the nametags to Scott.

Is it possible to safeguard a hotel against terrorism?

In light of the horrific explosions at the Taba Hilton yesterday, Hospitality Net is conducting a poll to gauge people’s feelings about hotel security:

Protecting a Hotel Against A Terrorist Attack Is Mission Impossible
I agree 63%
I do not agree 38%

I don’t know why I was surprised by the results, since I’m in the majority on this one. I do believe there is much that can be done to lessen the likelihood of an attack, to increase the safety of guests in the occurrence of an attack, and to get people evacuated to safety and needed health services more quickly. But eliminate the risk? Sadly, I don’t think it’s possible. Do you?
