The latest in destination promotion
According to travelwirenews, there’s a show in Sydney, Australia, that caters to the travel needs of gays and lesbians. Which is very smart marketing, given that “The gay market has more disposable income, and has a propensity for travel. There is a trend toward more diversified travel experiences, and this‹combined with discretionary income and a greater variety of options‹puts the “gay market” in a league of its own,” according to Community Marketing. The market is conservatively estimated at $47 billion just in the U.S., or approximately 10 percent of the total U.S. market.
The Aussies are in good company in their attempts to tempt this niche:

I was talking with a public show producer at SISO couple of weeks ago. He does lifestyle events (men’s show, women’s show, babies show, etc.) in a traditionally Democratic-leaning state. I asked him whether he’d considered a Gay/Lesbian event. He told me he was afraid of losing all his other business. That answer really surprised me. With the right $$ backing, I’d do one here in Pgh if there were any support for it, but the community here still is a bit closeted and the numbers weren’t working. I wish Pgh would’ve done what SF did with the whole marriage thing. Lord knows we could use an influx of creative people with money to spend.

It’s too early to tell, but Massachusetts’ legalization of gay marriage has probably upped the gay tourism here, and after the initial round of shock and horror, no one’s complaining any more, at least not that I’ve heard. And I remember reading a while ago that Philadelphia’s efforts to attract this demographic are starting to pay off.Who knows, maybe Pittsburgh’s next?Sue P
