A good day for those whose names start with “S”

Well, actually, mine’s been a little rocky, but Singapore and San Juan should be happy—they just were added to Best Cities alliance of global convention bureaus, effective January 1st, 2005. According to the press release:

BestCities is the only global alliance of convention bureaus that together develop best practices through innovation and knowledge exchange, professional development and client servicing for or within the meetings industry. Singapore and San Juan will join Boston, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dubai, Edinburgh, Melbourne and Vancouver as members.

So it really is a pretty big deal—congratulations on the fruits of your labors, my sisters in the “S” family!

Free audioconference

PCMA is being very, very nice! It is replaying its Security Door-to-Door” audioconference for free, with a little help from Conference Archives, Inc..

According to the Web site, the conference had more than 3,000 hits the first four hours it was up—and I heard from a friend who attended the actual conference that it was extremely well done. Maybe I’ll check it out tomorrow afternoon instead of goofing off, as I’d planned :0

Or maybe I’ll just gaze at this totally mesmerizing interactive Web site. Puts me in a very Zen state of mind…

British Airways caught on the Web

A guy found that he couldn’t buy a BA ticket from Brussels to London online because his credit card “isn’t billed in the same country the flight originates in (Er, hello? You’re an airline — that means you deal with people who are traveling, sometimes to countries other than the one that they reside in),” he says.

But it would have cost 400 percent more to buy the ticket over the phone. After various other tries, he called the London reservations desk of SN Brussels Air—and got the same price that BA offered over the Web. “That’s no surprise: as it turns out, the flight is operated by British Airways. It’s the same [@$%] plane,” he says.

I’ll never understand airline pricing!

How to win e-friends and influence people (via e-mail)

Or, more appropriately, how not to tick people off with your e-mail messages–another must-read manifesto from changethis.com. I think I’m going to send this link to my distant cousin who likes to send chain letters and fake virus alerts to his entire extended family.

Hotels shift into high gear on Internet access

According to an American Hotel & Lodging Association study, half of all hotels now offer high-speed Internet access (in 1998, only 7 percent did). Well, that’s great–now can they provide it without charging an arm and a leg to use it?
