Thoughts on social media from the Pharma Forum

I may have mentioned the Pharmaceutical Meeting Management Forum that we cosponsored last month with The Center for Business Intelligence. One of my favorite sessions was one led by our Medical Meetings social media columnist, Brian McGowan, PhD. I cornered him after his session and asked him to give us a few thoughts he took away from the session. Here’s what he had to say (and big thanks to Brian for being such a good sport about doing this):

ACCME wants to know—logos in commercial support disclosures, in or out?

The Accreditation Council for CME’s latest e-newsletter included a call for comment about a proposal that would require disclosures to commercial support to omit logos and any mention of corporate divisions. Current policy around Standard 6 of the Standards for Commercial Support—under which providers must disclose commercial support sources to learners—says its OK to use logos and slogans in CS disclosures as long as they don’t promote specific products. ACCME’s chief executive explains more about it in this podcast, if you want to learn more.

Deadline for responses is June 6.

Update: Wow, it never occurred to me someone would take this spin on the proposal—ACCME Seeks to Hide Drug Company Disclosures in the Fine Print, from the Carlat Psychiatry Blog.

#CMEchat going on now on Twitter

I’m a little (okay, a lot) late in mentioning this, but there’s a fascinating discussion going on at #CMEchat on Twitter right now about social media and CME. It’ll be going on until noon EST (and it repeats every Wednesday 11-12 EST, with new topics).

If you missed it, it’s being archived on Twapperkeeper and in PDF format on the CME Advocate blog. Question: Do you think a summary of these chats would be a good addition to Medical Meetings (in print or on the Web site or both)?

CME at TEDxMaastricht

There was a familiar face at TEDx Maastricht, the European gathering for bright ideas, bold thinkers, and innovators in medicine and healthcare: Lawrence Sherman, who in addition to writing a column for Medical Meetings is a regular speaker at CME conferences. Check it out:

I like what he’s saying—and that the topic of CME was represented at this conference.
